Concept

Phase shift — where it appears

A change in the phase of a wave produced by a reflection, a transmission or a path, with no change in its amplitude. Past the critical angle for total internal reflection it is the only thing distinguishing one angle from another, and its difference between the two polarisations is a retardation with no material in it.
