Concept

Photoelectric effect — where it appears

The ejection of a bound electron by a single photon carrying more than its binding energy. Read as a function of photon energy it is a threshold, and in an attenuation curve that threshold is a step — a material becoming suddenly more opaque to a harder photon, which nothing smooth produces.
