Concept

Evanescence — where it appears

The behaviour of a wave whose wavenumber has gone imaginary, decaying with distance rather than propagating. It carries no energy away and it carries the fine detail an ordinary lens cannot collect, which is why a probe placed within a fraction of a wavelength of a surface resolves far below the diffraction limit.
