Concept

Work function — where it appears

The energy needed to remove an electron from a metal into the vacuum outside it, a few electronvolts for every clean surface. It sets the barrier height in a tunnelling junction and therefore the rate at which the current falls with the gap — about a decade for every ångström at four and a half electronvolts.
