Latitude — where it appears

The angle from the equator, and the quantity that decides how much of the Earth's rotation is projected onto the local vertical. Every rotating-frame effect carries its sine: the Coriolis parameter, the inertial period, the Foucault pendulum's rate, and the geostrophic wind all vanish at the equator and are largest at the poles.
