Fresnel diffraction — where it appears

Diffraction close enough to an aperture that the curvature of the wavefront across it still matters. It adds wavelets with a phase growing as the square of the distance from the axis — the small-angle form of exact propagation — and gives way to Fraunhofer diffraction far away.
