Concept

Thermal diffusivity — where it appears

A material's thermal conductivity divided by its heat capacity per unit volume, measuring how fast a temperature change spreads through it. A disturbance reaches a depth of about √(αt) in time t, so daily temperature swings penetrate soil about ten centimetres and annual ones about two metres.
