The liquid that will not slow down
Cool helium below 2.17 kelvin and it starts flowing through gaps no ordinary liquid could enter, climbs out of its own container, and circulates for as long as anyone has been willing to watch. The viscosity is not small. As far as any measurement can tell, it is zero.
The point at which the two become one
Heat a sealed tube of carbon dioxide and the meniscus inside it does not boil away — it fades, the two densities converging until there is nothing to separate. Twenty millikelvin before that happens the fluid turns milky, and the exponent describing the last approach is a number van der Waals got wrong and could not have got right.
The transition with nothing to order
Every transition in this collection so far has an order parameter — a quantity that is zero on one side and not on the other. In two dimensions a continuous symmetry cannot break at any temperature above zero, so there is nothing for such a quantity to be, and by the usual reckoning there can be no transition. There is one anyway, and what changes at it is whether vortices are bound in pairs.
Two lengths, and which one is longer
A superconductor has a depth to which a field leaks in and a distance over which superconductivity itself can be built up. Which of the two is larger decides the sign of the energy of a boundary — and therefore whether the material keeps every field out or fills itself with a lattice of holes.
The voltage that is a frequency
Two superconductors separated by a barrier a nanometre thick carry a current with no voltage at all, set by the difference of their quantum phases. Push harder and a voltage appears — and a voltage makes that phase difference run, so the current oscillates at 483.6 gigahertz for every millivolt. Shine microwaves on the junction and the voltage locks to exact multiples of the frequency divided by a ratio of fundamental constants, with nothing about the junction in it. That is why a volt is now counted in cycles.
