Fresnel zones — where it appears

The annular regions of a wavefront whose distances to a chosen point differ by successive half-wavelengths, so that alternate ones arrive out of step. Blocking every other zone makes the remainder add rather than cancel, which is how a zone plate focuses without refracting anything.
