Momentum diffusion — where it appears

The transport of momentum sideways across a flow, which is what viscosity actually is. Molecules crossing between layers carry their forward momentum with them, so the shear stress is a diffusive flux rather than a friction — and the coefficient in it is the mean speed times the mean free path.
