Born rigidity — where it appears

The condition that every part of a body keeps its distance from its neighbours as measured by themselves, which is the only definition of rigidity relativity allows. Herglotz and Noether showed that a Born-rigid body has three degrees of freedom rather than six and cannot change its rotation rate, so a rigid disc cannot be spun up.
