Adiabatic theorem — where it appears

The statement that a system stays in the eigenstate it started in, provided its Hamiltonian is changed slowly compared with the gap to the nearest other state. How slowly is quantitative — the chance of jumping falls exponentially in the gap squared over the sweep rate — so a small gap is far more permeable than its size suggests.
